i came across this the other day in an article in the local Zürich newspaper.
Tages-Anzeiger Saturday 10.march.2007 Wirtschaft p. 26
the article is in german. german is not my 'mutter sprache' so i will probably miss some things.
the article talks about a new book, 'Neotopia - the totally fair world'.
the book is authored by Manuela Pfrunder a 28 year old Swiss, Grafikerin.
it was, originally, a diplama dissertation and since being published it has won a number of prizes.
the book is a graphical representation of a 'totally fair world.'
it has been meticulously researched and the numbers quoted are accurate.
what Manuela did was take 6 billion, the world's population, and apportion various things to each of the 6 billion of us.
some examples:
- each of us would have a piece of ground to live on that would be 291.5 meters square, all with a bit of desert, forest, pasture, ice, and a bit of a beach and also a little island.
- we would drink mainly tea + 1/2 of a deciliter of Coca Cola each day.
Coffee only every two months.
- 13 weeks out of each year, one would not have any clean drinking water.
- for 8 months and 4.5 days of each year one would not have any running water, i.e. water coming out of the tap.
- 60 days of each year one would have nothing to eat.
- each day one would smoke 2 cigarettes, on the weekend you would smoke 3 cigarettes each day.
- a new pair of jeans would only be available to one every 70 years.
- the beach, a part of every land parcel (6 billion of them) would be polluted with 1.025kg (2.2 pounds) of oil every year.
..............................
i googled this lady and found this site, among others.
i think one would be well served to browse > here

Basho, are there plans on publishing this in English? Can't find any translations. Suppose I'll have to learn German, then.
Thanks for sharing this with everyone.

hi keith-
according to the publisher's site, it is available in english and german.
i have emailed them for details after reading your post.
googling the isbn only comes up with the DE version
there is also a site where one can register their own island. i haven't been able to get it to work.
you've got more important things to do than learning german. :)
LOL Basho! German would be a grand language to learn!!!
I checked the links you mentioned above, but they're … in German! Even the “English” link.
hi keith-
versions are available in english and german, although they seem to have the same isbn.
the publisher will be happy to ship you a copy.
they speak and understand english, so no worries about communicating your wish.
